ABC has announced that the new seasons of Will Trent and The Rookie won’t premiere until 2025, a shift from their expected Fall debut. This delay is part of a strategic move to enhance the shows’ success, and there’s some exciting news about it as well.
Craig Erwich, president of Disney Television Group, shared with TV Line that the decision to push the shows to January is deliberate. “Both The Rookie and Will Trent are pivotal to our lineup,” he said. “The Rookie continues to thrive in its sixth season, and past episodes are performing strongly on Hulu. Meanwhile, Will Trent has emerged as a major hit in recent years.”
The move to January is intended to leverage ABC’s high-profile promotional opportunities, including New Year’s Rockin’ Eve, college sports, and Christmas programming. This timing allows both shows to enjoy an uninterrupted season, running straight through without any reruns.
Erwich emphasized the power of maintaining momentum with consecutive original episodes, which he believes will be beneficial for both series. TV Line reports that each show will feature an 18-episode season, promising a robust lineup for the new year.
