While John Nolan and Bailey Nune got engaged early in “The Rookie” Season 5, a Season 6 wedding might not be the best move for the storyline. Although the couple has been together since the beginning of Season 4 and their relationship grew serious quickly, there have been hints suggesting that their engagement may not be built to last. They’ve faced numerous challenges along the way, but the writers have subtly hinted at unresolved issues that need to be addressed before they walk down the aisle.
Nolan, the show’s lead, has had several romantic interests over the past five seasons, but his relationship with Bailey has been the most serious. However, their engagement, which came in the aftermath of Bailey’s near-death experience at the hands of serial killer Rosalind Dyer, felt rushed and like an afterthought. For “The Rookie” Season 6 to maintain its narrative integrity, Nolan and Bailey’s evident issues should be explored further rather than skipped over with a quick wedding.
Hints of a Possible Breakup in Season 5
Throughout Season 5, “The Rookie” subtly foreshadowed a potential breakup between Nolan and Bailey. Several plot points suggested that the couple might not be as strong as they appear. For example, in Season 5, Episode 4, Rosalind Dyer kidnapped Bailey and presented Nolan with an ultimatum: kill her or watch Bailey die. Nolan ultimately couldn’t pull the trigger, which raised questions about his commitment to Bailey, especially when considering the lengths he’d go to for someone he truly loved.
After their rushed engagement, Bailey hesitated to move in with Nolan. When she finally did, a small earthquake destroyed a good luck gnome he had kept, symbolizing a rocky future. Furthermore, Nolan’s occasional forgetfulness about their engagement and the lack of focus on their wedding plans suggest underlying tension. For Season 6, it would feel forced for Nolan and Bailey to marry without addressing these concerns, as it could create narrative inconsistencies and plot holes.
Is There a Better Match for Nolan?
If “The Rookie” writers decide to address the red flags in Nolan and Bailey’s relationship in Season 6, it could lead to a breakup. While Bailey has been a significant character, her departure wouldn’t drastically affect the series since her primary connection is to Nolan (and possibly Celina). Moreover, should Nolan and Bailey part ways, “The Rookie” already has another potential love interest waiting in the wings—Genny Bradford.
Genny, Tim Bradford’s sister, moved to Los Angeles with her two sons in Season 5, Episode 9, following her divorce. Nolan assisted her with the move, and their interactions hinted at a spark between them. Both Nolan and Genny share similar backgrounds and life experiences, suggesting they could have a strong foundation for a meaningful relationship in Season 6. If Nolan and Bailey don’t work out, Genny could be a more compatible partner, offering fresh storylines and character development.
