After a dramatic year for the Chrisley family, Todd and Julie Chrisley have begun their prison sentences. Their daughter Savannah is speaking out about how this has affected her life and their family. It’s been a huge “loss” for her.
Savannah Chrisley has been open about how difficult it has been for their family while Julie and Todd Chrisley are in federal prison, comparing the separation to “grieving a loss.”
They have not been able to be together under normal circumstances for over a year now.
On January 17 of 2023, Julie and Todd went their respective ways to officially start their prison sentencing. Todd headed to Florida to serve his time at FCI Pensacola, while Julie is behind bars in Lexington, Kentucky.
She recorded an Unlocked podcast on January 12th of that year, five days before her parents reported to jail.
The 26-year-old began by calling the time an “extremely difficult week for my family as a whole and for each of us individually.”
“We kind of had to say goodbye to my parents for a little bit of time, for the foreseeable future,” Savannah explained. “And that was really, really, really tough.”
The reality star said that the episode might seem surprisingly “happy-go-lucky,” but clarified that it was recorded before she had her “life falling apart.”
Their eldest daughter elaborated, “I think it’s because there was a lot of hope that was had and I wasn’t faced with the reality of the situation.”
Just a month earlier, she went into detail about how difficult the transition was, even going as far as to say it was like losing her parents.

Just a month earlier, she went into detail about how difficult the transition was, even going as far as to say it was like losing her parents.
Savannah opened up about the topic to Emmy Medders, then-fiancée of her brother Chase Chrisley.
“Dad’s always been my go-to,” she shared on an earlier episode of Unlocked. “That’s always been my steady. If I’m having a bad day, he knows.
“He’s just like, ‘What’s wrong? I know you’re struggling today.’ We just have that relationship and we talk about every single thing. That’s where I can go to and just completely fall apart and him help me bring myself back up.”
She compared the feeling to losing her parents.
Savannah continued, “With both mom and dad, I’ve said it’s like grieving the loss of parents that are still alive, which is the hardest thing in the world. I feel like I’ve distanced myself to prepare for what’s coming.”
The podcaster has shared that she’s ready to move on, but it isn’t easy.
“It’s like learning to grieve the loss of people who are still alive, and grief is real. It is,” Savannah shared on her podcast Unlocked. “Sometimes I like to turn a blind eye to it. I like to not feel it.”
“It’s so hard because, like, the first year mom and dad were gone, literally every weekend, I was gone,” she added “Every weekend, I went and visited one of them.”
“And now, I mean, I say we go twice a month now, and there’s definitely some guilt associated with it because you’re like, ‘Nah, I shouldn’t be moving on with my life. I need to be there. I need to be seeing them,’” Savannah elaborated.
“I’m trying to figure out, like, okay, how do I move on without making my parents feel like I’m moving on without them?” she spilled. “How do I, you know, please everyone, which I think is kind of hard to do. It’s probably impossible. I don’t know. It’s really tough.”
Savannah has previously shared that even if this appeal doesn’t play out the way they hope, the family has backup plans.
“If it doesn’t go in our direction, we have other avenues to take,” she recently shared on her podcast, Unlocked.
“Once again, like, super grateful for that, that there are other avenues due to how our trial played out that we could take to get a new trial or to you know just hopefully get them out early,” she elaborated on her podcast, People reports. “So when it comes to the appeal, that’s kind of where we’re at.”
