9-1-1: Top Moments from “Karma’s a Bitch” (Season 1 Episode 8)

On 9-1-1 Season 1 Episode 8, “Karma’s a Bitch,” what goes around comes around. However, as everyone soon finds out this isn’t as cut and dry as one might think. For the patients, they definitely get what is coming to them but, for Bobby, his karma isn’t all bad.

Here are the top moments from “Karma’s a Bitch.”

We have all known for some time now that Bobby is shouldering quite a bit of guilt about his family’s death. However, we find out that it goes deeper than just guilt. Bobby feels he needs to make penance for his actions.

He needs to save 148 people, and “then I can go,” as he says to his priest.

This breaks our hearts because it makes us realize that Bobby doesn’t even want to be alive longer than necessary to complete his task. Bobby our loving captain, and father figure, wants to die.

Bobby: Yeah I’m some lifesaver, aren’t I? It’s what I was put on this earth to do, but I couldn’t save my family. Couldn’t protect them from me. A hundred and forty-eight. That’s the number of lives that I owe for the mistakes I made. Once I’ve paid that debt, I get to be with them again.

Let that sink in a bit.

Athena and Hen: BFFs 4 lyfe

One of the greatest things to come out of 9-1-1 is the friendship between Hen and Athena. This is shown even more strongly in “Karma’s a Bitch” when the two women exchange relationship woes.

Hen comes clean to her best friend and tells her she thinks she is going to keep it quiet.

SAY WHAT?! You cheat on your wife and then you want to sweep it under the rug?

We are probably all glad that Athena manages to set the girl straight. Athena knows a thing or two about secrets and what they do to a marriage. Of all the people who could give Hen advice, Athena is a perfect choice.

Through it all, these sisters will be there for each other. With what is coming for Hen, let’s just hope that Athena will be there with a warm shoulder, an open heart, and some good strong alcohol.

Death becomes him

Of all the karmic retribution moments, the best two are the awful, clearly animal-hating, men. Their deaths give fans the satisfaction of them getting what they deserve.

The gym manager guy locks his dog in his truck and then fires his employee for saving the dog. Ugh, despicable. He deserved to bake in that faulty tanning bed he refused to fix.

I am not a vengeful person, and I don’t wish death on anyone, but I’m willing to make a few exceptions.

Don’t even get me started on the man at the zoo. Here is a guy who hunts exotic animals for sport, or at least approves of such practices. Then he antagonizes a tiger to the point of escaping.

As Hen says, “Karma is a wild animal, and she won’t be caged.” To find out that he gets eaten by the tiger seems like justice in some way.

Athena asks for a divorce

I am especially glad that Athena’s storyline ends with her tearful exchange with Michael and a ray of hope on the horizon.

Athena has been through so much in dealing with her husband’s confession and the subsequent fall out for her family. She is only trying to do what is best for her family because they mean the world to her.

Her kids tell her that she needs to live honestly because it’s better than what they are currently doing.

Which is why it’s so great that she tells Michael she needs to move forward because she loves him. This is a tough step for Athena. She has been suppressing her feelings for so long.

I’m glad she is moving forward and making positive moves in her life. Athena deserves love and happiness. By the looks of that bar encounter, she just might get it.

Hen spends all episode repeating the phrase “karma’s a bitch.” So, it comes as no surprise that she ends up getting the biggest dose of karma.

Her discussion with Athena, while not excusing her actions, does provide fans with a reason to feel empathy for her.

Hen was going home to come clean to her wife, in a show of good faith. It’s just unfortunate that Eva beats her to the punch. To partake in the affair and then use it against Hen to gain custody is low.

While neither parties are innocent, you can’t help feeling for Hen at this moment. She made a mistake and now it is costing her everything.

Bobby’s Kids

We haven’t had a chance to really get to know Chimney, rebar in the head and all. This moment where he gets to be the wise one really makes you tear up for just that reason.

Bobby has done so much for Chimney, and he finally gets the chance to give some of that back. What better way to do it than to show him his true purpose in life. Chimney reminds Bobby that he has a rare opportunity to put so much good back into the world.

Chimney: Look, you’re gonna see your own kids again. I do believe that. But right now, Asha and a thousand others just like her — they’re your kids too. That’s your blood in their veins. So you look at her, you look at her and those young parents, and you tell me if that feels like a punishment.

I’m interested to see this bond through. I want more Chimney and Bobby. It’s wonderful and refreshing.

Chimney sees more of Bobby than anyone else because on some level he understands it. He knows what it’s like to feel that hopeless and to have someone save you. Chimney is finally the hero he deserves to be.
