ABC’s 9-1-1 returns this fall, set to premiere on Thursday, September 26th, 2024, entering its eighth season. Following the shocking 9-1-1 season 7 ending, season 8 picks up from the 118’s former captain announcing disappointing news to the team, shaking up the new season with new complications, interpersonal challenges, and new situations for the team to confront. 9-1-1 is notorious for its season openers, as throughout different seasons Los Angeles has endured a massive earthquake, tsunami, zoo stampede, city-wide blackouts, and mudslides, nothing the 118 can’t handle.

9-1-1 season 8 will follow the 118 team’s adjustment to working with their new captain, who is also a familiar face, which will be anything but simple and easy for them. 9-1-1’s season will open with a three-part “bee-nado” event that will spiral into multiple problems for the team to fix. Outside the firehouse, the characters will also face their own personal challenges, including Eddie coping with his son moving to Texas with his grandparents, Buck and Tommy’s new relationship, and Athena and Bobby finding a new home.

Although ABC has no confirmation of an episode count for 9-1-1’s new season, the series is expected to return with a full season. The previous season was shortened due to the ongoing delays from the previous resolved writers’ and actors’ strikes. The upcoming season is the second season to air on ABC after the show moved over from FOX, hopefully returning with an episode count of 18 to complete season 8.

9-1-1’s first episode begins as the first of a three-story arc event starting with a dangerous swarm of bees causing chaos in Los Angeles, which later transitions into another situation for the team to handle. Following season 7’s ending, the 118 will also face immediate changes at the firehouse, adjusting to Bobby leaving the 118 in 9-1-1 after former captain, Gerrard, publicizes his retirement plans to everyone and takes over as the new captain. There will be more to buzz about once 9-1-1 returns, as other additional interpersonal conflicts are expected to be explored and highlighted this season.
