9-1-1 star Ryan Guzman has unpacked a major moment between his character, Eddie, and Buck (Oliver Stark) in season 7, episode 5. The episode sees Buck confiding in his friend that he is bisexual, revealing that he is dating Tommy after the two kissed in the previous episode. The touching moment shows the duo’s friendship isn’t going to change because of this, as Eddie is happy his friend is finally figuring out who he is.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Guzman explained how the moment Buck comes out to Eddie in 9-1-1 season 7 is a major point for his character development. The actor revealed his own experience of having a friend come out to him, making the moment all the more important for him when it happened in the show. Check out what Guzman had to say below:
I think we felt this scene was coming one way or another — and we knew we had to handle this with care, because there are so many people who have attached themselves…. Oliver and I are so grateful for the people who have attached themselves to our characters, and what they do with it. And so we really wanted to give this scene a sense of groundedness. And luckily for me, I’ve had an experience in my life where a friend trusted me with their own coming out, and I got to understand first person that it wasn’t so much about me accepting them, it was more about me allowing them to feel safe and loved.
So I wanted to exemplify that in this scene. Like, “Hey man, you can say whatever you got. I’m not going anywhere. Okay? This connection remains.” That was something that forever changed my life — in my personal life, with my friend — so this had to feel the same for the millions of people who are going to see it, because some may not be getting this from their friends. Some may be scared to do this in front of their friends, and maybe this gives them the opportunity to find their own bravery, as Buck did, and go to their closest friend and say, “Hey, this is how I feel nowadays. Can you explore this with me?” I love that scene.
How Buck Coming Out To Eddie Progresses His Story
Buck comes out to Eddie after his friend sees him out with Tommy, deciding to tell him that he was on a date despite not knowing what it would do to their friendship. The fact that he was willing to trust his friend by coming out so soon shows he’s slowly starting to realize who he is because of their kiss. This will likely impact how open he is about himself to others going forward, perhaps getting brave enough to tell the rest of the team about his newfound sexuality.
The fact his storyline is moving so quickly already indicates how the future of the show could see him in a more confident position about his bisexuality. This means the renewed 9-1-1 season 8 may not even focus on him coming to terms with himself, instead already showing him as confident in his relationship with Tommy. If his story continues to progress, it can act as a positive tale regarding how quickly he’s able to accept who he truly is. It could also lead to a broader love story between him and Tommy.
By coming out to Eddie so soon, Buck may also feel like he can accept himself by having a friendly shoulder to lean on. Having the support of someone who’s been his friend for a while means he can feel more confident in himself moving forward, no matter the reactions of other people on the team. Since his relationship with Tommy is only just beginning, it remains to be seen how 9-1-1 will continue to explore his sexuality, and how his story could carry over into future seasons.
