The Rookie has done a lot in the back half of Season 5, but its primary focus has been Chenford. Fans have been enthralled with the slow burn between Bradford and Chen, and “S.T.R.” gave things a new development by reintroducing Bradford’s ex-wife Isabel. However, that was only one of the episode’s plots. The main plot brought Skip Tracer Randy back to the LAPD, and once again, it was hilarious.
“S. T. R.” was only Randy’s second appearance on The Rookie, but he’s already made a lasting impression. Every time he shows up, there’s bound to be trouble, and fans are all for it. The character is played by German actor and comedian Flula Borg, who has great chemistry with Nathan Fillion’s Officer Nolan. Given Randy’s comedic nature and how he fits in with the cast, one could make a legitimate case that Skip Tracer Randy deserves a series regular role on The Rookie.
Who Is Skip Tracer Randy on The Rookie?
Skip Tracer Randy first showed up in Season 4. Detective Harper wanted to dig up some dirt on her ex-husband, so she hired Randy over the phone. A few episodes later, Nolan needed information on Bailey’s piece-of-work husband and employed Randy’s services too. Then, in Episode 14, “Long Shot,” Randy made his first appearance in the flesh. He had given up skip-tracing and wanted to work as a full-time bounty hunter.
Randy wasn’t cut out to be a bounty hunter. He was lively and energetic, and he wasn’t very good at following clues — or directions. To his credit, he did help solve a case but didn’t contribute much. There was even a point when he accidentally got caught in a coffin-like sex box and another point when he got shot — twice. However, that didn’t stop him from trying to make friends. He actually ended the episode having dinner with Bailey and Nolan, who he named his “besties.”
Skip Tracer Randy Should Be a Series Regular on The Rookie
Given how “Long Shot” ended, fans weren’t surprised to see Skip Tracer Randy back in Season 5, and he quickly showed why he deserves more screen time. Early in “S. T. R.,” Harper and Nolan were having a conversation at the LAPD when Randy called asking about the legality of trespassing. Harper told him not to trespass, but he did it anyway and found a dead body. He managed to trip on the deceased person’s blood, and the police arrived just in time to arrest him. Flash-forward a bit, and he did the exact same thing again with a different dead body. Turns out it wasn’t just Déjà vu, though, because someone was trying to frame him for murder. So, just like in Season 4, Randy helped Nolan and Harper solve the case, and mayhem ensued, providing the necessary tonal shift his character brings.
