‘9-1-1’ Star Oliver Stark Celebrates Powerful Same-Sex Kiss: “It’s a Show About Love and Inclusion”

Oliver Stark of 9-1-1 has expressed his gratitude for the overwhelming fan support following a groundbreaking moment for his character, Buck, who shares a surprise same-sex kiss in the series’ 100th episode. The actor took to social media to reflect on the positive feedback and emphasize the show’s commitment to representing love in all its forms.

In the milestone episode, Buck, played by Stark, shares a passionate kiss with his new friend, Tommy Kinard, portrayed by Louis Ferrigno Jr. This marks the first time fans see Buck exploring a romantic relationship with another man, a bold move that has garnered praise for its heartfelt portrayal.

“Humbled and overwhelmed by the positive reaction to Buck’s storyline,” Stark wrote in his Instagram Story. “I’ve read so many of your messages, and I couldn’t be prouder.”

Stark also addressed the critics who felt the moment didn’t fit with the show’s narrative. He confidently responded, “If you’re part of the smaller group complaining that this has ruined the show, I want you to know that I truly don’t care.” He continued, highlighting that 9-1-1 has always been “a show about love and inclusion.”

The actor reminded viewers that the series has consistently showcased diverse relationships, including the powerful representation of a Black lesbian marriage between characters Henrietta (Aisha Hinds) and Karen (Tracie Thoms) Wilson. “If one character finding a new facet to his sexuality and realizing his bisexuality is your deal breaker — I fear you’ve missed the entire point of the show. You are not required to announce your departure,” Stark added.

Currently in its seventh season, 9-1-1 has built its reputation on portraying the lives of brave first responders at Station 118. Co-creator Tim Minear described the show to The Hollywood Reporter as one that revolves around “a found family of heroes—people who run toward danger.” He further emphasized that the show’s characters are morally upright heroes who are there to save lives, no matter the circumstances.

Stark’s candid message has only strengthened his connection with fans, solidifying his character’s evolving storyline as a powerful representation of love and acceptance in a time when representation matters more than ever.
