Casualty fans are familiar with Doctor Dylan Keogh (portrayed by William Beck) and his preference for the company of his cherished dog Dervla over human interaction.

However, in a turn of events that aired on Saturday night, Dylan was confronted with devastating news that Dervla’s cancer had spread.

In the most recent episode of the popular BBC series, audiences were brought to tears as Dylan found himself at the veterinary clinic where he was informed about Dervla’s state.

Despite learning that the canine’s cancer had metastasized, Dylan insisted on further tests and treatment options in an attempt to extend Dervla’s life.

Throughout the show, it became evident that Dylan was increasingly distracted by his dog’s health crisis, which led to him overlooking signs that one of his patients had been victims of assault.

Later, during a staff briefing, Dylan received a call from the vet announcing the heart-wrenching decision that Dervla’s condition was untreatable and euthanasia was the kindest option.

The programme delivered a poignant scene in which a tearful Dylan cradled Dervla, whispering reassurances and expressing his deep bond with her, stating: “You’ve been the best friends I’ve ever had. I hope I’ve given you a good life,” reports the Mirror.

As the veterinarian administered the euthanasia medication, Dylan offered comfort to Dervla, softly urging her to lock eyes with him, murmuring, “Just look at me, it’s ok, it’s ok.”

Dervla’s breathing gradually ceased as the vet left them alone for a moment. Through his tears, his final words to his cherished dog were: “Sleep well, sweetheart. Sleep well.”

In the show’s closing moments, Dylan was seen walking home with Dervla’s lead in hand as Sophia Peters (Kellie Shirley) appeared to console him.

Viewers quickly reacted to the heart-wrenching scenes, with many reduced to tears. One viewer tweeted: “Dylan – ‘You’ve been the best friend I’ve ever had, I hope I’ve given you a good life’. Haven’t cried this much watching Casualty before. RIP Dervla.”

Another person remarked: “If anyone is going to watch #Casualty make sure you have tissues ready. The scenes with Dylan and Dervla the dog. William Beck is such a good actor.”

“SOBBING!!! Dervla” another viewer wrote. Overwhelmed by the scenes, one person added: “This might be que to stop watching. Rip Dervla.”

Another commented: “Dervla’s death is absolutely heartbreaking.” Someone else noted: “This is one of the saddest episodes ever. Well done for covering pet loss also.”
