Casualty star Melanie Hill is hoping for a romance storyline for her character, Siobhan Mackenzie, following her comeback to the BBC medical drama earlier this year

Melanie Hill is longing for a romantic plotline in Casualty for her character.

The 62-year-old actor, who plays clinical nurse manager Siobhan Mackenzie, has revealed that she would like her character to get into a relationship with a dreamy doctor. Chatting with RadioTimes.com, she hinted: “Maybe a romance with an absolutely gorgeous doctor that gets up to all sorts, who knows?”

She further enthused: “She’s not that old, she’s still got a bit of life left in her bones. Yeah, you never know, that’d be quite nice.” Interestingly, Hill also noticed some parallels between her real life and her role. She explained: “I think I’m kind of close to her because I’ve got my kids [who] have grown up, her kids have grown up, moved away from home, and she’s taken all help.

“It appears that she cares deeply for her staff and her nurses. I think that’s similar to me, really, in the way I’ve joined the cast, my kids have grown up, moved away, and I’ve adopted all the younger cast in ‘Casualty’, really.” Even though there’s no hint of love for Siobhan on the soap opera presently, Hill expressed delight at the successful relationship between Siobhan’s colleagues, Ian (Michael Stevenson) and Faith (Kirsty Mitchell).

With a chuckle, she added: “[Look at] Faith and Ian, because they’re getting on really well at the minute. So watch that space, because you never know what might happen there. There might be a joyous future for them. I think it will be.”

Melanie opened up about playing Siobhan McKenzie earlier this year. “As long as my brain keeps going, I’m quite happy to carry on working. I love it and I love the routine,” the actress said. “I get a bit lost at Christmas when you’ve got time off. I prefer to have structure.”

Although she admitted to being a bag of nerves at auditions, away from work she discovered that mindfulness and the power of nature helped her enormously. “I started around the time I left Corrie,” she said. “I do mindfulness, grounding and I hug trees. I do it every day. It might sound a bit hippy, but I feel so much better when I’m outside in nature and if I can’t get out every day, I get depressed. “[Mindfulness] is all about living in the moment.”
