Warning: SPOILERS ahead for 9-1-1 season 8, episode 1!9-1-1 star Oliver Stark, who portrays Buck, has responded to fans’ divisive reactions toward the bee-nado in season 8, giving his thoughts on the new danger the team has faced. During 9-1-1 season 8, episode 1, a truck carrying 22 million killer bees crashes on the highway, resulting in a swarm that has been teased as “bee-nado.” The premiere episode focused on the team trying to quell the invasion across Los Angeles, with team members like Buck needing to do some quick thinking in order to keep the people they’re helping safe.
Speaking with Screen Rant, Stark explained how he’d seen mixed reactions to the bee-nado in 9-1-1 season 8, but has been urging people to keep an open mind about the storyline. He also believes the series is at its best when the team deals with wilder cases, stating he’s happy with the way the new threat turned out. Check out what Stark had to say below:
I’ve seen mixed responses to it. I’ve seen some people really excited by the silliness of the whole thing, and then I’ve seen other people who are somewhat dubious or skeptical of it, and I say, “Hey, give it a watch. I promise you it’s a lot of fun.” [But] No, I don’t think so.
I found over the years that I’m often wrong if I make too many predictions on how things will be received, so I just steer away from doing it in general. But personally, I think it’s great. I’m a huge fan of it, and I always want the show to be larger than life, so the fact that we are very much leaning into that aspect, I think it’s when 9-1-1 thrives, and I think it’s where we as a cast get to thrive. I was super excited for it, and I’m really happy with how it’s turned out.
What Stark’s Thoughts About Bee-Nado Say About 9-1-1 Season 8
More Wild Stories Could Be On The Horizon
The season 8 premiere delivered one of 9-1-1′s most intense disaster moments, as Buck and the team had to devise ways to save multiple groups of people from the fast-moving swarm of bees. This all happened while under the leadership of Vincent Gerrard (Brian Thompson), who continually butts heads with other team members after becoming Captain of Station 118 at the end of 9-1-1 season 7. The tension allowed for bee-nado to be about more than just the insect threat, also highlighting the first disaster the team has to contend with while under stressful new leadership.

Stark’s positive outlook of the bee-nado storyline also reflects the many other wild events the team has dealt with, including a tsunami in season 3 and a cruise ship sinking in season 7. What makes their newest disaster stand out, however, is the level of tension within the team now that their dynamics are so different with Gerrard around. It also appears the bee-nado isn’t done with LA, much like previous premiere disasters, meaning more difficulties surrounding the major insect swarm could see even more tension between Buck and Gerrard.
At the end of 9-1-1 season 8, episode 1, Buck accidentally saved Gerrard from a buzzsaw that flew loose at a nearby construction site, potentially having additional consequences in future episodes.
Our Take On 9-1-1’s Bee-Nado Storyline
It’s A Fun & Intense Way To Bring The Show Back

Although the bee-nado storyline is farfetched when it comes to realism, 9-1-1 has never backed down from showcasing its characters dealing with wild situations. Given the intensity of the premiere, the threat of killer bees is something the show can clearly make into an interesting antagonist, something that helps define the wild nature of season 8. With more disasters on the way, following Athena (Angela Bassett) in the throes of a plane crash, this appears to be just the start of the major incidents ahead.
