New story details on 9-1-1 season 8 reveal Bobby’s status and his job after retiring from the 118, teasing a meta twist. Fitting for the show’s high-profile move from Fox to ABC, all the show’s main characters experienced significant changes, but perhaps none more so than Bobby Nash (Peter Krause). Struggling with troubles from his past, Bobby nearly dies and ultimately loses his home in a fire. He leaves his post as the leader of the 118, with the 9-1-1 season 7 finale confirming that the villainous Gerrard (Brian Thompson) is Captain Nash’s replacement.
In a new preview from Entertainment Weekly, there are new details about what the character is up to. When it comes to Bobby and Athena (Angela Bassett), they are looking for a new home. Bobby is forced to follow through with his retirement and take a job as an advisor on an action series called Hotshots. Given that 9-1-1 is itself an action drama, there’s a chance for some meta-commentary.
Bobby Likely Won’t Stay Away From The 118 For Long During 9-1-1 Season 8
But How Will He Find His Way Back To The Team?
It’ll be a busy return for 9-1-1 season 8. Other character details reveal that Buck (Oliver Stark) struggles to accept the new captain while Maddie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) and Chimney (Kenneth Choi) are trying to help Hen (Aisha Hinds) and Karen (Tracie Thoms) after their foster family unit was upended by Councilwoman Ortiz (Verónica Falcón). For his part, Eddie (Ryan Guzman) is mourning his son Christopher (Gavin McHugh) moving away to Texas. And away from all the personal conflict, the team will be dealing with a bee-related disaster.
9-1-1 is co-created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Tim Minear, with Minear serving as showrunner.
As has been the case throughout the history of 9-1-1, the question is less about whether Bobby will stay retired for good and more about what his likely temporary time away means for him and those that he loves. After several seasons, it remains to be seen if Bobby will truly accept his shortcomings and learn to live with his own mistakes. It also might mean that, in the interim, someone else in the 118 might realize their potential for a leadership role. At different times, it seems to have been Chimney, Hen, or Bucky.
But this being 9-1-1, which knows when to poke fun at its own procedural trappings, perhaps the writers can use Bobby’s new job in the TV world to poke some fun at what the 118 has gone through over the years. The premise would be fun for at least a few episodes, helping to maintain the hit series’ crucial balance between the humor and the heavy.
